Youth, Tech, & Wellbeing gathering held Aug 17th at the Australian Embassy in Washington
On August 17th, All Tech Is Human held its Youth, Tech, and Wellbeing gathering at the Australian Embassy in Washington, DC. The event was structured as a gathering across civil society, government, industry, academia, and youth advocacy to understanding community values, trade-offs, resources, and promote knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and a more cohesive community.
Participants came from the Beeck Center for Social Impact & Innovation, Berkman Klein Center, British Embassy, Center for Countering Digital Hate, Center for Democracy & Technology, Embassy of France to the US, Family Online Safety Institute, Future of Privacy Forum, GIFCT, Google, Headstream, Hopelab, Integrity Institute, Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, Meta, Mozilla Foundation, Oversight Board, Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab at American University, Spectrum Labs, Tech Coalition, TechCongress, Thorn, TikTok, the United Nations and more.
Medha Tare, PhD is an experienced researcher in the learning sciences and technology area. Her work centers on addressing the needs of the whole child, including considering individual differences among learners, their environments, and the media through which they learn. Prior to the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, she was the Director of Research for the Learner Variability Project at Digital Promise, where she developed resources for educators and product developers on the cognitive, socio-emotional, and background factors that impact children and adults’ learning and well-being. She has also served as a Learning Sciences Exchange Fellow through New America, working across sectors to promote early learning and help young children and their families thrive. Medha earned her PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Michigan and her BA in Cognitive Science and English at Rutgers University.
Chanel Cornett is a Counsel on the Trust & Safety team at Zoom. Prior to joining Zoom, Chanel was a Legal and Policy Officer at Fair Trials, where she worked on criminal justice reform policy. Before Fair Trials, she spent her first year post law school graduation working for California Attorney General, Xavier Beccerra's legal and policy advisory team. She is a graduate of Howard University School of Law and held internships at the Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia, and the U.S. House of Representatives. Chanel attended undergrad at Marietta College and is a Cleveland, Ohio native based in Washington D.C.
Arielle Geismar is an organizer around mental health, social media wellbeing, and women’s & LGBTQ+ rights. As a digital metal health educator, she works with startups and entrepreneurs to advise on youth digital wellness and hosts daily self care check-ins on her social media. She has partnered with mental health campaigns with companies such as Patagonia, Metaverse Inc., and TOMS and uses the method of content creation and storytelling to further her investment in building power within young people. She has worked on a variety of projects in the digital universe: spanning from truth Initiative’s viral “Depression Stick” campaign to Headstream’s “Collab Lab” with technology leaders representing Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and more. She is currently consulting with Hopelab to create a co-creation system with tech products and young people.
Named in Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21, RED’s 20 Under 20, and a thred. 100, Arielle has received exciting recognition for her work. She is proud to have contributed to Biden’s Transition Team on their search to understand the youth mental health crisis. She looks forward to continuing to implement change and graduating from George Washington University in 2024! When she’s not investing in young people’s digital wellness, you can find her embroidering, playing ultimate frisbee, reading queer theory, or connoisseuring coffee blends.
