Key Takeaways from our Tech & Democracy Online Mixer

On September 20th, All Tech Is Human hosted an online mixer on Tech and Democracy in preparation for the next working group on this very topic. (You can sign up for our working group right now, with a report arriving in Feb 2023). For our recent online mixer, individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds across the globe gathered from breakout conversations around five emerging themes that we had noticed from our earlier in-person Tech & Democracy mixer in NYC. Each breakout room was led by an individual from the community for a free-flowing conversation to meet new people, share resources, and find areas of collaboration.

The five key themes we have identified so far include:

  • Data Privacy

  • Misinformation and Disinformation

  • Combatting Online Radicalization

  • Digital Governance

  • Multistakeholder Collaboration

Key Takeaways

  • Tackling issues in tech and democracy requires structural change and ethical mechanisms to address cases that require immediate response.

  • Tech platforms lack capacity to monitor political activity and evaluate nation-state contexts.

  • There is a concern about how our data is collected and utilized, and how decision-making is influenced, like voter turnout, public safety, and groupthink.

  • Incorporate narrative to understand the needs of the community.

  • Multistateholder collaboration is critical to understanding the landscape of tech and democracy, take collective action, and shape norms for the good.

Get involved and continue the conversation!

Couldn’t attend? No worries! As we continue to prepare for our working group, we want to hear from you. Who should be featured in a profile interview?
