What are the key topics for your organization in 2024?
In 2024, X Reality Safety Intelligence (XRSI) is focusing on several key topics, with updated areas of focus as follows:
Children’s Online Privacy and Safety: Supporting the Kids PRIVACY Act for enhancing online safety and privacy for children and teenagers.
Research and Standards Development: Developing standards and guidelines for XR technologies, including privacy, safety, and ethical considerations.
Medical XR and Immersive Healthcare: Collaborating with various organizations to use XR in healthcare, working on a framework to ensure the safety and security of XR-based medical services and products.
Diversity and Inclusion in XR and Cybersecurity: Through the Cyber-XR Coalition, emphasizing diversity and inclusion within XR and cybersecurity fields.
Safety and Privacy Guidance for Emerging Technologies with a Focus on AI: Providing guidance and resources related to safety and privacy concerns in the context of rapidly evolving technologies, particularly AI. This includes developing best practices, frameworks, and standards to manage risks associated with these technologies.
Awareness and Education: Engaging in various awareness and education campaigns, such as the Metaverse Safety Week Awareness Campaign and Similar Activities, to inform and educate stakeholders about the importance of safety in virtual environments as well as emerging technologies. These campaigns aim to raise awareness about the challenges and potential risks in the emerging and other immersive technologies, promoting safe and responsible use.
These areas reflect XRSI's dedication to creating a safe and secure environment in the emerging tech and XR domains, with a particular focus on privacy, safety, and inclusivity.

Rapid Advancement in Emerging Technologies: Tackling the risks and opportunities arising from the rapid development of immersive technologies and AI.
Privacy and Data Protection in Emerging Technologies: Managing massive data collection associated with emerging technologies, particularly in immersive environments, and addressing the inadequacies of current privacy laws and data protection principles in the context of these technologies.
Child Safety in AI-Augmented Environments: Protecting children in AI-driven platforms, focusing on psychological safety and safeguarding their digital identities in these rapidly evolving environments.
Cybersecurity Challenges in the AI-Powered Metaverse: Addressing rising cybersecurity concerns in the evolving AI-powered metaverse, including data protection and the potential for new types of cyber threats.
Standard Development and Policy Coordination for Emerging Technologies: Creating and implementing standards and guidelines specifically for emerging technologies and AI, and fostering policy coordination among various stakeholders.
Funding for Mission and Initiatives: Securing adequate funding to support initiatives and research in the safety, privacy, and security of emerging technologies and AI. This includes organizing events like Metaverse Safety Week to attract sponsorships and donations.

What are the most exciting Responsible Tech initiatives you're working on?
XRSI is working on several exciting Responsible Tech initiatives in 2024, which include:
XRSI Privacy and Safety Framework: A comprehensive rulebook created by a diverse group of experts from various domains. This framework sets standards, guidelines, and best practices for privacy and safety in immersive technologies. It incorporates privacy requirements from GDPR, NIST guidance, FERPA, COPPA, and other evolving laws, and is designed to adapt to new regulations. This framework particularly emphasizes the protection of personal information in XR data pipelines, including biometrically-inferred data.
Child Safety Initiative: This initiative involves creating a collaborative framework called the Guardians and Shield Framework. It aims to ensure the well-being of children worldwide in emerging technology ecosystems. XRSI encourages input from multidisciplinary experts for this project, which includes regular open community sessions for knowledge sharing and discussions. They have also been instrumental in creating a special edition of ChildArt Magazine, focusing on how the new generation experiences and engages with the Metaverse.
Support for Legislation and Policy Making: XRSI supports legislative efforts like the Kids PRIVACY Act, CAMRA Act, review of COPPA 2.0, endorsing stronger safeguards for children and teenagers online. This demonstrates their commitment to influencing policy and governance to foster responsible innovation in emerging technologies.
Advocacy and Advisory Services: XRSI offers a range of services including standardization, certification, policymaking, and workforce development professional advisory services for the emerging technology domain. Their work spans safety, privacy, security, human rights, human well-being, responsible innovation, governance, and regulation, ensuring the ethical advancement of emerging technologies. XRSI will continue to promote the global awareness campaign for safety awareness around emerging technologies with its 5th edition in December 2024
