Office of Evaluation Science (OES), U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) - Design Fellowship [Remote / Washington, D.C.]

“The Office of Evaluation Sciences (OES) is an interdisciplinary team that works across the federal government to help agencies answer top priority questions...OES is looking to bring on an expert in human centered design methods to embed qualitative approaches into how we develop solutions.”

In this role, you will “Serve as an advisor to OES project teams in developing and implementing qualitative research activities as part of the project intervention design phase,” and “Engage in agency discussions and conversations to better understand barriers and opportunities for process changes; identify opportunities to translate findings from human-centered design research, in addition to insights from the social and behavioral sciences, into concrete recommendations for improving Federal programs.”

The successful candidate will have “experience leading discovery sprints, conducting qualitative customer/user research efforts, and creatively designing process changes and/or communication artifacts, such as websites, letters, and fliers.”

“All fellowship positions will be remote and location flexible within the United States. Design Fellows will serve at least a six-month term or detail, with interest and availability to serve additional years preferred,” and the closing date is December 10th.

Ontario Digital - Digital and Data Innovation Fellowship [Ontario]

“Digital and Data Innovation Fellowship Program is helping us forge that path by inviting Ontario’s best digital and data practitioners to work on transformational digital projects. The program will match successful fellows with the right projects for their skill sets and integrate them into existing government teams. We are looking for 6 to 10 fellows, who will take a leave of absence from their current workplace and join a government team for about six months, starting in February 2022.”

“Fellows will remain employees of their organization, but we will pay a portion of their salary (up to $140,000 per year, prorated to fellowship length) while they are working with us.”

“Fellows will have the opportunity to deliver the type of high-impact digital and data projects that are only possible in government and tackle important and unique public-sector challenges.”

“We’re looking for expert practitioners from digital and data organizations operating in Ontario. Our ideal fellows have seasoned technical, Agile and design skills.”

Harvard University - Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: explainable, fair, adversarial, and differentially private ML [Cambridge, MA]

“Prof. Hima Lakkaraju invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship position at Harvard University starting in the Spring/Summer of 2022. The selected candidate will be expected to lead research in novel machine learning methods. More specifically, this fellowship will focus on making theoretical and methodological advances at the intersection of explainable, fair, adversarial, and differentially private ML.”

“We seek highly-motivated applicants with background in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, explainable ML, adversarial ML, fairness and differential privacy, statistical learning theory. Successful applicants will be strong technically as well as have an inclination towards real-world problems.”

“Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in computer science, statistics, or a closely related field. Strong programming skills and experience with machine learning and its applications are required.”

American Civil Liberties Union (aclu.org), Legal Analytics & Quantitative Research team - Data Scientist II - Algorithmic Justice Specialist [New York / Remote]

“The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Data Scientist II- Algorithmic Justice Specialist in the Analytics Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY/ Remote."

“ACLU Analytics partners with teams across the organization to enable the ACLU to make smart, evidence-based decisions and bring quantitative insights on our issues to the courtroom and the public. Our team's work ranges from social science research for litigation & advocacy, to analysis & reporting for fundraising and engagement, to building and maintaining our data infrastructure.”

In this role, you will “Evaluate algorithms and predictive models using a range of techniques to assess their impact on marginalized communities, especially but not limited to disparities based on race, gender, sexuality, disability status, immigration status, income, and housing status,” and “Analyze disparities in policing, housing, criminal law enforcement, employment, and education, sometimes in contexts where algorithms are used or considered, and sometimes in contexts where they are not,” among other duties.

Qualifications include “Extensive experience conducting descriptive analysis and using or evaluating predictive models in a research or applied setting,” and “Experience evaluating the ethics of algorithm scoping, development, testing and/or deployment in a research or applied setting,” as well as “Mastery in R or Python, and ability to rapidly learn new frameworks and methodologies,” and “Ability to distill complex quantitative results and methodologies into plain language for lawyers, advocates, judges and the public,” and “Familiarity with modern methods for assessing fairness in predictive models,” among others.

“The annual salary for this position is $115,638.”

Phillips Academy Andover - Visiting Scholar in Ethics and Technology [Andover, MA]

“Phillips Academy seeks a talented, interdisciplinary-minded Visiting Scholar in Ethics and Technology with interests in philosophy, computer science, and design for a two-year position exploring the intersections of ethics and technology with our students and faculty. The two-year appointment will begin in September of 2022.”

“Minimum requirements include demonstrated success in the teaching at the secondary or university level and a demonstrated commitment to writing and public-facing scholarship in the intersection between the fields of technology and ethics.”

”The role has three main components: teaching, collaboration, and writing.”

The German Marshall Fund of the United States, Digital Innovation and Democracy Initiative - Program Manager and Fellow [Washington, D.C.]

“The Digital Innovation and Democracy Initiative is the technology program of The German Marshall Fund of the United States, harnessing GMF’s extensive networks across the US and Europe to ensure that the next waves of innovation will support – rather than undermine-- democratic values. DIDI connects technologists, civil society, and the transatlantic policy community to catalyze inclusive innovation that strengthens democracy, with a focus on: (1) digital platforms, (2) supply chains and critical technologies, (3) Artificial Intelligence, frontier technologies and industrial policies. DIDI develops new agile, open, and accountable approaches to solving cutting edge challenges.”

“The Program Manager and Fellow will report to Senior Fellow and Director of DIDI to develop the formats for high-level meetings, identify and reach out to participants, commission research, and track policy developments in the US and Europe. This person will also grow and foster networks and partnerships, representing and presenting the initiative’s work to policy makers, funders and stakeholders at conferences in the US and Europe. The Program Manager will be a visible spokesperson and representative of GMF and will conduct research and policy analysis. The position will involve a mix of program management, outreach, event management, research, analysis, and writing.”

Qualified candidates will have “Experience in and knowledge of public policy, political economy, and/or global governance, and interest in how these relate to technology, especially digital platforms, data, and AI,” and “Research and writing experience,” as well as “Demonstrated experience of 3 years + Masters or at least 5 if no Masters,” and a “Master's degree in social sciences, technology/public policy, or international relations preferred.”

TechCongress - Congressional Innovation Scholars [Washington, D.C.]

“We are bridging the divide between Congress and the technology sector by placing tech savvy students like you-- who have recently finished a Master's program or PhD, or are early on in your career-- to work with Members of Congress and Congressional Committees in order to build capacity in Congress, train cross-sector leaders -- who can understand the challenges of government and in the technology community -- and keep Congress up to date about the latest challenges and opportunities relating to technology.”

The qualified candidates are “Recently finishing (or projected to finish by June 2022) a technical degree program (Master's, PhD, or done with PhD coursework and still completing your dissertation), or early on in your career.”

“Please note: this program is for recent graduates and students with a technical background only. Common relevant degrees include computer science, engineering, data science, informatics and other technical disciplines.”

“Scholars earn a stipend equivalent to $60,000 annually during the 10 month program ($5000/mo.),” plus a variety of benefits.

“Fellowship runs from mid-June 2022 to mid-April 2023 (ten months),” and the deadline to apply is January 20th.

Twitter, Health Product - Civic Integrity - Sr. Product Manager - Civic Integrity & Misinformation [Multiple Cities, U.S. / Canada]

“Our team at Twitter is seeking product managers who are committed to increasing the collective health and openness of public conversation and engagement on Twitter. Depending on your role, you will be responsible for driving product strategy and building features to protect the integrity of elections on the platform, reduce misinformation and elevate credible information, or mitigate the harm caused by harmful group activity, which includes violent and extremist groups and coordinated harmful activity (such as harmful QAnon content).”

Center for an Informed Public (CIP), University of Washington - Postdoctoral Scholar - Studying Rapid Response Misinformation Mitigation Efforts [Seattle]

“The University of Washington Center for an Informed Public (CIP) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar to work on a recent National Science Foundation funded project titled “Building Rapid-Response Frameworks to Support Multi-Stakeholder Collaborations for Mitigating Online Disinformation”. The postdoctoral scholar will be appointed in the Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering, College of Engineering at the University of Washington.”

“One goal of the broader project is to develop frameworks for building and deploying multi-stakeholder collaborations for “rapid response” to disinformation. This specific study (that the postdoctoral scholar will lead) aims to better understand some of the complexity of doing this kind of data science — i.e. the rapid analysis of “big” social data — in a highly collaborative and high-stakes environment. We are seeking someone with a strong qualitative/ethnographic background as well as some familiarity with analyzing social media data and with the context of online mis- and disinformation.”

“Applicants must have a PhD, JD, EdD, or foreign equivalent by date of appointment.”

“The position will begin as early as January 2022 and offer an initial two-year term with the possibility for a third-year renewal.”

TikTok, Trust & Safety Engineering - Machine Learning Engineer Summer Intern (Trust & Safety)[London]

“Our Trust and Safety engineering team is responsible for developing state-of-the-art machine learning models and algorithms to protect our platform and users from bad content and abusive behaviours.”

In this role, you will “Work with our world-class engineers to build industry-leading trust and safety systems for TikTok,” and will be “Developing highly scalable ML learning algorithms for computer; vision, natural language processing, data mining and user modelling,” among other tasks.

Qualifications include, “Currently in your penultimate year pursuing a bachelors degree or in your final year going on to study a Masters, graduating in 2023 - Studying computer science, engineering or a related technical discipline,” and “Available from June 2022 for at least 12 weeks,” as well as “Knowledge in at least one of the following areas: machine learning, NLP, computer vision or data mining; - Familiar with deep learning computing frameworks (e.g. Pytorch, Tensorflow etc. ).”
