DeepMind - Ethics and Public Policy Research Intern [London, UK]

DeepMind is looking for a London-based Ethics and Public Policy Research Intern “to play a central role in our team’s efforts to provide evidence-based ethics and public policy analysis, and insights, to internal stakeholders at DeepMind.”

“This role is an exciting opportunity to gain experience working in a new kind of organisation where we seek to challenge our assumptions through groundbreaking research and collaboration with a range of specialists from machine learning, political science, philosophy, and more.”

The qualified candidates will be “Currently enrolled in a degree programme, which you’ll return to, where your core focus is on science and technology policy, ethics, or a related field.”

University of Technology Sydney - Projects Manager – Responsible Technology [Sydney, AUS]

University of Technology Sydney is hiring a full-time Sydney-based Projects Manager – Responsible Technology for the Facial Recognition Model Law Project for a fixed term of 12-months.

The qualified candidate will “possess a relevant degree with subsequent work experience in areas related to responsible technology.”

In this role, you will “Develop and manage a consultation program with key experts on facial recognition technology. Oversee qualitative research being undertaken by external service providers. Design and deliver a final report that will outline a model law on facial recognition technology,” among other responsibilities.

The base salary is $92,791 to $102,650, and the closing date is November 19th.

Ada Lovelace Institute - Visiting Senior Researcher (Covid Technologies) [London, UK / Remote]

Ada Lovelace Institute is hiring a full-time remote or London-based Visiting Senior Researcher (Covid Technologies) for 18 months “to monitor the international deployment and use of Covid technologies such as vaccine passports and contact tracing apps, and to describe their legacy as we move towards the late-stage pandemic and beyond.”

The qualified candidate “may have a background researching for an academic organisation, policy department or a regulator, a tech company, research institute or charity. You may have a university degree, or have gained experience from an apprenticeship or trainee programme at a research, policy, private-sector or civil-society.”

In this role, you “will lead a project to monitor the use of covid passports and related technologies beyond the pandemic, exploring international approach, politics, governance, public attitudes and technical models. This will involve mapping emerging and ongoing uses of vaccine passports, extending our already existing international Covid monitor and building evidence of lessons to be learned from the deployment of these tools. The research will also examine the legacy of these technologies on society, whether they normalise health surveillance, or create or expand digital ID systems for example.”

The salary is £40,000, and the role closes on November 25th.

Social Science Research Council (SSRC) - Just Tech Fellowship [Remote]

Social Science Research Council (SSRC) has opened a call for applicants for the inaugural cohort of its Just Tech Fellowship for this year’s fellowship theme of Crisis and Reparation for a 2-year award of $100,000/year. “The Just Tech Fellowship and its fellows seek to build toward technological futures that celebrate and manifest justice, equity, agency, knowledge, and joy.”

“This call invites applicants to explore questions like the following:

  • How do new technologies mitigate or reinforce long-term inequities during and after crises? How does technology diminish or enhance community resilience in times of crisis?

  • How can different ways of creating and communicating knowledge—from art to data science to community-based research—help us better understand the relationship between crisis and technology? How can these explorations enable us to imagine alternative futures in the aftermath of a crisis?

  • How can the lived experiences of marginalized peoples—such as ethnic and religious minorities, gender nonconforming and disabled communities, and those living in poverty—inform the design of just technologies, especially in the face of crisis?”

“Applicants must hold either a college-level credential, such as a bachelor’s degree in the arts, fine arts, sciences, or a demonstrated track record of success in their respective fields.”

The call is open until January 02.

University of Virginia, School of Data Science - Chair of Responsible Data Science [Charlottesville, VA]

The University of Virginia School of Data Science is seeking a full-time Charlottesville-based Chair of Responsible Data Science to “lead the development of a core area within the school, akin to a department. The school does not have departments per se but rather areas of concentration that foster interdisciplinarity and collaboration across the full spectrum of data science activities.”

The qualified candidate should have “National and international recognition for research and teaching of the interplay between data and algorithms and the human consequences of their use.”

In this role, your responsibilities will include “recruiting faculty and students to build the field of responsible data science, maintaining an internationally recognized research program, contributing to the educational mission of the school as we expand an existing Masters in Data Science as well as develop PhD and undergraduate programs.”

Microsoft (Xbox team) - Responsible AI Principal Manager [Redmond, WA]

Microsoft’s Xbox Services & Operations (XSO) team is hiring a full-time Redmond-based Responsible AI Principal Manager “to help build the Responsible AI program within the Gaming organization.”

The qualified candidate will have “7+ years’ experience executing at-scale technical capabilities and driving compliance by design or privacy by design architectural solutions into software…7+ years’ experience implementing privacy or security compliance and policies into corporate tooling and practices…7+ years’ experience in Project Management, Program Management, Feature PM or equivalent….1+ years’ experience with artificial intelligence techniques and concepts”.

“In this position, as part of the Gaming Privacy Team, you will build and carry out Gaming’s Responsible AI implementation, developing programs and strategic initiatives that support Gaming’s ability to develop new technologies and maintain compliance with an evolving regulatory landscape.”

IBM - AI Ethics Intern - Business Analytics & Communications [Armonk, NY]

IBM is hiring a full-time Armonk, New York-based AI Ethics Intern - Business Analytics & Communications “to learn about IBM’s Chief Privacy Office by assisting various teams across our organization.”

The qualified candidate will be a “Rising College Junior” with a High School Diploma or GED.

“You will be involved in Data Privacy and AI Ethics projects with a focus on business analytics and communications.”

DataKind - Data Scientist [Remote]

DataKind is hiring a full-time remote Data Scientist for one year to “manage a set of long-term projects across a range of themes under the Economic Resilience Impact Practice, staffing teams of talented pro bono data scientists who have the right skills with our nonprofit partners.”

In this role, you will provide Technical Project Management and Volunteer Management, and as such will “Ensure the technical quality of cohort of up to seven DataCorps® projects,” as well as “Work with staff members on the Programs team to vet and select a diverse group of volunteers for project teams, assessing technical skills and matching them to project needs.”

Because Humanity - Chief Technology Officer [Cambridge, MA]

Because Humanity is hiring a full-time Cambridge-based Chief Technology Officer “to shape the products, management and culture of a pioneering organization that aims to reinvigorate public discourse and increase its impact by making the search for solutions to society’s biggest challenges more broad-based and truly democratic.”

“We are looking for a product-oriented engineer with the ability to lead and influence in a fast-paced, creative environment. The role includes building and leading a team of engineers, data scientists and analysts tasked with developing Because Humanity’s technology and products. The CTO will be overseeing partnerships with two world-class computer-science teams, at Dartmouth and MIT’s Center for Constructive Communication, that have done groundbreaking work on computational social-science problems.”

The ideal candidate has “Has a degree in Computer Science with MS or PhD-level knowledge of Machine Learning and/or at least 5 years experience at a top tech company or startup developing and deploying production AI systems…Experience with ML Ops and deploying production machine learning systems at scale, especially leveraging large-scale language models such as BERT, GPT…Has a deep grasp of Machine Learning.”

The salary for this role is $180,000 - $200,000.

Cornell Tech, Digital Life Initiative (DLI) - Associate Director [New York, NY]

Cornell Tech is hiring a full-time New York-based Associate Director for the Digital Life Initiative (DLI) for one year to focus on “strategy, development, organization-building, and research project management.”

In this role, you will “Create and maintain a strategic plan and organizational processes for the DLI…Create and manage the DLI’s programmatic relationship with funders and partners, in collaboration with other Cornell Tech offices…Oversee the DLI’s research activities and personnel,” and other tasks.

The ideal candidate will have a “Master’s degree in cognizant field (philosophy, computer science, information science, economics, etc.), and interest in the areas of digital technology and society, including ethics and/or policy. (A Bachelors’ degree may be acceptable with highly relevant, leadership experience.)…3 or more years of experience in leadership and management in academia or nonprofits, with demonstrated experience in strategy and organization-building.”
