A healthy digital space for the Responsible Tech community. All Tech Is Human’s Slack has a diverse mix of 6k members across 82 countries.

One of the biggest issues with building community in the Responsible Tech movement is: How do you find the others? This is a major “pain point” for individuals looking to learn about issues, socialize their work, and find people and organizations to collaborate with. All Tech Is Human, a non-profit committed to strengthening the Responsible Tech ecosystem so we can tackle wicked tech & society issues at the speed of tech, has been heavily focused on creating spaces for people to come together. This allows us to better understand values, best practices, and pathways to co-create a tech future aligned with the public interest.

A scene from our Responsible Tech Mixer that took place in NYC on May 31, 2023. Each month in NYC we bring a capacity crowd of 200 people, along with gatherings in SF, London, DC, and additional cities to be added.

All Tech Is Human started a Slack group for the Responsible Tech community on November 23, 2020. Our Slack has now grown to over 6k members across 82 countries, mixing the emerging with the established with a diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives across civil society, government, industry, and academia.

Why Is This Important?

Our Slack community directly leads to impact. People not only build community online but often utilize our Slack to meet up in person. Individuals new to Responsible Tech gain a better understanding of the ecosystem, find mentors, and have a space to share their ideas. And for people looking for roles in Responsible Tech, our Slack has directly led to individuals getting hired.

All Tech Is Human’s Slack ties into our larger theory of change which is that having a stronger Responsible Tech ecosystem will enable us to better tackle complex tech & society issues. Our Slack fits into the three key areas we are fixing:

  1. We need to diversify the traditional tech pipeline with more backgrounds, disciplines, and lived experiences. Our environment is welcoming and conducive for a broad range of individuals to come together under a shared mission.

  2. We need to be more collaborative as a movement. Our Slack is a space for knowledge-sharing and collaboration, which leverages the immense amount of previous work that has been done and taps into a desire to have collective action.

  3. We need to move at the speed of tech. Our Slack allows us to move quickly by collecting feedback, curating resources, and convening people in person or online.

Insight into our Slack community

People find out about our Slack through word of mouth along with our numerous engagement points with the Responsible Tech community. We have a mentorship program that over 1k people have participated in, regular summits and mixers that have been attended by thousands, working groups that nearly 1k people have participated in, a talent pool of 2k people, a widely-used Responsible Tech Job Board, our reports (including our Responsible Tech Guide). Founded in 2018 and supercharged in the summer of 2021 when we became a funded non-profit, All Tech Is Human is synonymous with the Responsible Tech movement.

For this post, we wanted to provide insight into our Slack community. All Tech Is Human recently brought on a full-time researcher, Sara M. Watson, who is sifting through our significant amount of information to better understand the Responsible Tech ecosystem and the people in it.
