Intern, The Real Facebook Oversight Borard

Are you a student interested in Facebook accountability? The Real Facebook Oversight Board (RFOB) is hiring interns for Fall 2023! RFOB is a group of prominent global experts, journalists, and academics, some of whom are the company’s fiercest critics, looking to hold Facebook to account (NBC). Our flagship research, the Facebook Receipts, is designed to expose Facebook’s activity in Washington D.C. and around the globe as it attempts to influence legislation and regulation. The goal is to pull back the curtain on Facebook’s influence operations that it tries to conceal from public view.

Practitioner Fellowship at the Digital Civil Society Lab

The Practitioner Fellowships at the Digital Civil Society Lab (DCSL) welcomes applications for its 2024-2025 cohort.  The fellowship supports civil society practitioners working to address racial, gender, class/caste, sexuality, and economic inequality in relation to technology. The program aims to catalyze and support a broad range of projects led by the selected fellows that can inform and improve the vitality of digital civil society. Potential projects might include: designing tools to protect civil society actors and advance equity, developing policy frameworks to govern the use of data, prototyping tools to mitigate injustice in emerging technologies, or experimenting with new organizational structures focused on governance issues related to digital technologies. The fellowship provides time, space, expertise, and financial support to help turn ideas into prototypes or action, and fellows become part of a cohort and alumni network that thrive with access to an intellectual community.

Fellowships are supported by The Schmidt Family Foundation’s 11th Hour Project, The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and other funders of the Lab.

Policy Counsel/Analyst, Public Knowledge

Public Knowledge is seeking candidates for a Policy Counsel/Analyst to Public Knowledge’s mission to promote free expression, an open internet, and access to affordable communications tools and creative works. The Policy Counsel/Analyst will conduct policy analysis and thought leadership on a variety of tech, media, and telecommunications policy topics, with an emphasis on broadband policy. They also will work with other Public Knowledge staff to engage in advocacy and provide expertise for policymakers, in particular on Capitol Hill and at the Federal Communications Commission. Public Knowledge’s expert staff supports this work by promoting our values in the press, on public panels, with coalitions, and through white papers and other communications tools. 

Policy and Advocacy Strategist, Privacy, Technology, and Surveillance

The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois (ACLU-IL) has an open Policy and Advocacy Strategist position, centering on our Privacy, Technology and Surveillance (PTS) work.

The Strategist will primarily focus on our work at the intersection of civil liberties and PTS, including the use of emerging and existing technologies by law enforcement and private actors, automated decision-making, and informational privacy. The Policy and Advocacy Strategist works collaboratively across departments to use integrated advocacy tools, including legislation, policy change, coalition building, and communications, to advance meaningful change.

Program Coordinator, Wadhwani Center for AI and Advanced Technologies

The Wadhwani Center for AI and Advanced Technologies is hiring a Program Coordinator (PC) who is highly motivated, professional, and has a strong interest in program operations. The PC will support the administration and operations of the Wadhwani Center and will be responsible for a wide range of project components, including management support for program projects, managing program events, managing the project website and publications process, and supporting financial reporting in collaboration with the Associate Director.

This position is administrative and therefore requires excellent time management skills and careful attention to detail. Candidates should function well in a fast-paced team environment, adapt quickly to a wide variety of programmatic tasks, and have strong communications and project management skills.

Senior Policy and Research Analyst or Counsel on AI, New America

New America seeks a Senior Policy and Research Analyst or Counsel on AI who will play a key role across New America’s Technology and Democracy Programs. This person will bring substantive policy experience and domain expertise on emerging issues around AI, machine learning, and algorithmic accountability that will inform research, priorities, and technology sprint engagements. They will coordinate research, advocacy, and engagement across programs in order to support the evolution of an AI ecosystem that prioritizes transparency, meaningful accountability, and fairness. This position reports to the Vice President, Technology and Democracy.

Research Associate - Development of an AI Data Engineer, Alan Turing Institute

The Alan Turing Institute is recruiting for several roles to develop AI that can automate the data pipeline. The idea is that developing data models for an individual product is increasingly possible for companies. To automate the process we will focus on 4 main areas of research:

1. Pulling data from a range of sensors and generating well-structured databases.

2. Training Machine Learning tools and determining when retraining will be necessary.

3. Assuring the quality of these models.

4. Interpreting the results and communicating them to an expert without AI knowledge.

The aim is to work as a team to provide more than the sum of our parts, to learn new skills and to challenge ourselves to provide world-leading research.

Policy Analyst, Health Policy, Center for American Progress

American Progress has an immediate opening for a Policy Analyst on the Health Policy team. The Policy Analyst will work under the direction of the Vice President of Health Policy to promote policies that strengthen health. They will work with the team and senior fellows to conduct original analyses and advance policy proposals to expand affordable health coverage, lower health costs for consumers, and advance public health and equity. The position requires strong analytical, communication, and management skills.

The analyst will be an active collaborator with other American Progress teams, such as Inclusive Economy, the Women’s Initiative, Racial Equity and Justice, Government Affairs, and others as needed. The Policy Analyst will also collaborate with partner organizations on relevant and overlapping policy priorities and participate in advocacy coalitions.

Manager of Coordinator and Data, New York Immigration Coalition

This is a contract-funded position for a new rapid-response initiative that the NYIC is undertaking to support vulnerable migrants and asylum-seekers throughout New York State. This position will be for a period of one year (August 2023-August 2024) with the potential to extend for two more years, for a total of three years. The continuation of this position beyond three years is contingent upon available funding.

The Manager of Coordination and Data will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and security of the electronic data, oversee the data entry activities, check for completeness of data captured and transmitted, and provide quality assurance of the data.
